the mars volta and a perfect circle was amazing last night, especially the mars volta. i'd been trying to see them since this summer when they first came, but i have missed them, but last night was the night. cedric has so much energy and love for the music. he did jumps and flips and james brown-esque dance moves. his voice was perfect. omar did his prog-rock guitar god thing and danced a bit himself. everyone in the band was so on. immediately after their set, rachel and i ran over to the merchandise stand to buy mars volta t-shirts. to quote rachel, "if every punk band had that energy, god....". we were both thoroughly impressed. i'm not sure what caroline thought about them, though; she wasn't that responsive.
and then a perfect circle. i saw them last summer, but it was kind of a weird situation because i almost fainted in the pit, so i couldn't appreciate that show as much. but they were really great, even though rachel and i weren't sure how they could beat the mars volta set. i can't really compare them, though, because their kind of like apples and oranges, in my opinion. the lights were really fitting for the music and maynard's voice was incredible. 13th step is much better live and it helped me appreciate those songs even more. maynard was extremely talkative last night. he told lots of jokes and kept talking about james iha (because he's from chicago) and james even sang a short song of his. and, of course, they busted out with "judith" in the end, much to my pleasure. it was just an overall great show. this is the first concert i've been to where i've liked the opening band as much as the headlining (meaning i was a big fan of the mars volta, even before i saw them play). yesterday was near perfect. the nice weather must be doing me good.
